Picnics, Paint, and Parenthood: How I Started My Business

Updated: Dec 26, 2024

The phone started ringing, and it hit me—maybe this crazy idea would work after all!

When I opened my first mattress store, it was just a few months after becoming a foster mom. To be honest, I was hesitant about the whole business venture. My husband (at the time) was the one who pushed us to move forward with the investment. I wasn’t so sure.

I remember painting the walls of the new commercial space a bright blue while our foster kids ran around. We even had a picnic lunch on the floor of the unit as we waited for our first shipment of mattresses to arrive. It was a chaotic, exciting time. In some ways, having the kids there made the experience even more meaningful. I felt like I was constantly learning—not just about business but about being a mom, too.

There was so much I didn’t know. I didn’t know how to tuck them in at night or what to do when the night terrors came. I didn’t know how to balance cuddling vs coddling. And honestly, the same was true for my business. How do I track sales? How much inventory is enough? Do people even need mattresses?

I’ll never forget our first weekend in business. The phone started ringing, and it hit me—maybe this crazy idea would work after all!

Balancing business and motherhood for the past 10 years has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. It’s hard to feel like you’re doing everything “right”. But over time, I’ve learned something important: it’s okay to not have it all figured out. That’s part of why I created Sometimes a Mom—to support women like me who are trying to do it all. We may not be perfect all the time, but we can embrace the perfect moments along the way.

We are enough.
